Your Guide to Dental Implants

Some people are not aware of what dental implants are.  Actually they are used as a "root".  In a lot of cases, dentalimplants are made up of titanium.  They are generally used to help support tooth restorations, such as bridges, dentures and replacement teeth.  It looks a lot like a screw and is placed into the gum to help keep the restoration in the right place.  With today's medical advances, they actually look like the actual root of a tooth.

When you get dental implants, you should be aware of the fact that they are fused to the bone.  Since they are fused to the bone, it is likely that they will stay in place.  The only thing that they won't have that a normal tooth root does have is a periodontal ligament.  Since they don't have this ligament, you will find that they feel a bit different than a natural tooth would, especially while you are chewing food.

There are many reasons that dental implants are needed.  Mainly, you will find that they can help to keep dentalprostheses in place.  They can also be used in orthodontics as an anchor to help move teeth in the direction they need to go.  Some people may not be able to get dental implants.  First, you need to talk to your dentist in order to see if they would be ideal for you.  There must be enough bone available to implant the anchor.  Your health should also be ideal.

If you have decided that dental implants are right for you, then you will want to know what to expect.  First, you will want to know how they plan to implant the device.  Then, you will need to discuss the types of anesthesia that they will use.  Having the implant put in is generally not painful because you will be under anesthesia, but once it wears off the healing process can involve some pain.  They will usually provide you with some type of medication to help with pain management.

During the healing process, you should be aware of things that you should avoid.  For the next two or three months after the procedure, you will need to be careful that you don't damage the implant.  Be sure to follow all of the proper care and precautions that are given to you by the doctor that does your surgery.  If you follow the instructions carefully, your implants will be much more likely to have a greater success.
